20 Years on – Lessons from the Beaconsfield Mine Collapse

ANZAC Day 2026 marks the 20th anniversary of the Beaconsfield Mine Collapse – when Larry Knight lost his life and a desperate rescue effort was mounted for trapped miners Todd Russell and Brant Webb. Grant Chisnall recently sat down with Matt Gill the Mine Manager who led that rescue, to reflect on his leadership lessons two decades on.

What emerged was a conversation about Teamwork, Courage, Initiative and Mateship – the same values that define the ANZAC tradition. A profound reminder that in our worst moments, these aren’t just wartime values – they’re core values of all Australians.
