The Queensland floods gave us an important lesson on how to plan a safe shutdown and safe re-turn to work post a disaster. When the floods broke in the CBD – the entire city was evacuated, leaving many office workers without access to their devices to continue work. Many offices were inundated, forcing the buildings to go into full shutdown. This had a major impact on ac-cess to the principal places of work, cut essential services such as power to the buildings and impacted air conditioning, access control, server rooms and other essential services. The flow on effects were significant. In one case the servers shutting down meant that critical safety management systems were rendered inoperable. This affected remote mine-site operations – forcing them to shut down until hard copy plans could be supplied to the sites.
